What is Peers?
- The PEERS® Young Adults curriculum is for teens and young adults who are interested in learning strategies on how to form friendships, strengthen social relationships, develop dating skills, and handle conflict
- At the end of the 16-week program, participants will demonstrate several new skills that will last them a lifetime and can be used in everyday life settings.
- Each lesson includes specific instruction, video models, perspective-taking questions and behavioral rehearsal
- The internationally-claimed PEERS® program is developed by UCLA and is the first evidence-based group treatment program for young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder as well as other developmental disorders and social challenges
- An important note: Teens and young adults must have a motivation and a willingness to participate in this type of service
what do the lessons cover?
Teens and young adults will learn practical social skills and strategies, including
- how to start and maintain conversations
- finding a source a friends
- communicating electronically (texting, emails, etc.)
- resolving conflicts and how to disagree
- how to use humor appropriately
- handling bullying and teasing
- organizing get-togethers with friends
- developing language skills to use on dates
- communication strategies for handling dating pressure
